Dr Amir reveals what eyes can reveal about our health
Experts at Specart raised caution over bloodshot eyes, sensitivity to light, and dry or itchy eyes.
When it comes to bloodshot eyes, Specart explained: “Bloodshot eyes are typically a result of enlarged blood vessels on the eye’s surface.”
Causes can include:
- Fatigue
- Allergies
- Dry air
- Irritants.
“They can also point to underlying issues such as high blood pressure, infections, or even eye injuries,” Specart cautioned.

As for high blood pressure, the expert elaborated on how bloodshot eyes are linked to high blood pressure.
“Elevated blood pressure can strain blood vessels, including those in the eyes,” Specart explained.
Adding that strain on the blood vessels in the eyes can cause them to dilate and become more prominent.
“This can be a red flag for potential hypertension,” Specart ascertained.

If you find your eyes are sensitive to light, it could be for an array of reasons, such as:
- Eye infections
- Corneal damage
- Migraines.
“Migraines mostly go undiagnosed and untreated,” said Specart. “But they can have a serious effect on your sensitivity to light.”
As for corneal damage, this could be caused by a tiny scratch that will heal in time.
Itchy eyes might be indicative of allergies, such as dust, pollen or pet fur.
“The body’s immune response triggers the release of histamines, causing irritation and itching,” Specart explained.
Sticky eyes, on the other hand, could be a sign of conjunctivitis, which is a highly infectious condition.
Caused by bacteria or viruses, conjunctivitis can lead to excessive tearing and discharge.
“If you continuously find your eyes are sticky it might be a good idea to replace any makeup that you use on the eyes, change pillow covers routinely and stop touching your face throughout the day,” Specart suggested.
Anybody experiencing eye issues is best advised to see an optometrist at their local opticians.
