Eczema: Dr Ranj provides tips for treating condition

Eczema, also known as “atopic dermatitis”, is a skin condition that causes itchy and inflamed patches of skin, which can easily flare-up in specific conditions like cold weather.

Skin and beauty experts at Landy’s Chemist have now shared their tips on how to tackle the adverse effects of the cold weather on the skin this winter.

Rhysa Phommachanh, Personal Care Specialist at Landys Chemist explained: “While there is no cure for eczema, various methods and treatments can help control its symptoms.

“It is important to remember that everyone’s skin is different and what works for one person may not work for another. It is important to consult a Dermatologist or a doctor for a long-term treatment plan to manage your eczema.”

Moisturise adequately:

Combat the dry winter air by choosing a rich emollient moisturiser that forms a protective barrier to retain and lock in moisture, preventing irritation and dryness.

Switch to shower oils or moisturising cleansers:

Opt for shower oils or moisturising cleansers instead of traditional shower gels, which can be harsh on the skin, particularly for those with eczema. These alternatives clean the skin while preserving its natural moisture balance.

Limit hot showers:

Although tempting in winter, hot showers can contribute to skin dryness. Choose lukewarm water for bathing and keep showers brief to prevent skin irritation and exacerbation of eczema symptoms.

Hydrate internally:

Ensure you stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even in colder weather. Maintaining hydration is crucial for healthy skin, especially for individuals prone to skin conditions like eczema. Herbal teas and warm water with lemon are excellent choices.
