Im a doctor – heres what to do immediately if you think you have Covid

Dr Hilary discusses ibuprofen as possible COVID-19 treatment

Once you start coming down with Covid and symptoms like a sore throat or fatigue ring alarm bells, you are likely to head straight to your bed and wait to get better.

However, Dr Nathan Goodyear, Covid expert and medical director at Brio Medical, explained there are more things you can add to your arsenal of protection against the virus.

He told Express.co.uk: “Common historically practised immune supporting strategies, regardless of Covid or other viral variants, remain necessary and appropriate here.

“First, extra-rest and proper hydration are critical to recover from any viral illness.”

Apart from these obvious measures, chicken soup and supplements could also help.

The doctor explained that chicken soup could not only “entice” your tastebuds but also reduce congestion symptoms.

Dr Goodyear noted that while Covid and chicken soup haven’t been studied together, the popular remedy has been shown to reduce congestion symptoms in other viral infections.

Furthermore, the doctor recommended taking the following over-the-counter supplements to boost your immune support:

  • Vitamin D
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin C
  • Elderberry.

However, herbal remedies like turmeric, cinnamon and ginger could also boost your recovery.

A case report, published in the journal Cureus, found that turmeric could improve loss of smell and taste.

After taking a single supplement pill packed with 1000 milligram (mg) of turmeric extract and 10 mg of black pepper extract, a 25-year-old man experienced complete restoration of smell and taste just ten minutes after he took the pill.

Dr Tamara Alireza, Functional Medicine practitioner at Skinfluencer London, told Express.co.uk that cinnamon could improve Covid symptoms like fatigue, which seems to play a huge part in the latest Omicron variant, known as Pirola.

The doctor also shared that ginger could reduce severity, duration and symptoms of coronavirus.

While home remedies could offer a helping hand, patients at high-risk for Covid complications, including elderly, those with cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, blood clotting disease, and cancer, should also speak to their doctor, according to Dr Goodyear.

He added: “Please communicate with your medical team as your high-risk may require more conventional early medical intervention with medications.”
