How to get rid of scars: Top four natural remedies to reduce appearance of scars

Scars result from injury to the skin. The severity of the damage will be reflected in the prominence of the scar. Here’s 10 ways to minimise its appearance.

The skin is made of the epidermis – the outermost layer of the skin – the dermis, and subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis).

When a wound cuts deep enough – into the second layer of skin (dermis) – the body forms collagen fibres to repair the damage.

These more collagen fibres present upon healing, the bigger the scar.

Although scars may lighten over time, there are natural remedies that may help to speed up the process and make them less noticeable.

Take your pick of one of these natural remedies to help the scar fade away.

Aloe vera

One of the best known house plants, there are records of it being used for its medicinal properties since the 16th century BC.

The gel inside its leaves are famously used for soothing burns, and it’s also a good natural remedy to use on scars.

To take advantage of the plant’s healing abilities, remove the dark green skin from the flatter side of the aloe vera leaf.

Then scoop out the gel, apply it directly to the scar using circular motions, then rinse the gel off half-an-hour later with cool water.

It’s best to repeat this process twice a day to reap maximum results.

Honey

The National Honey Board explains: “Honey starts as flower nectar collected by bees.

“[This] gets broken down into simple sugars stored inside the honeycomb.

“The design of the honeycomb and constant fanning of the bees’ wings causes evaporation, creating sweet liquid honey.”

Before going to sleep, cover your scar with a layer of honey and cover it with a bandage.

When you arise in the morning, remove the bandage and wash off the honey with warm water.

Vitamin C

The potent antioxidant can “aid in your skin’s nautural regeneration process”, said dermatologist Patricia Wexler.

Dermatologist Dr Mraz Robinson added: “It can help combat hyperpigmented scars in addition to helping build new collagen and thus, smooth out acne scarring.”

Researchers from the Institute for Human Tissue Restoration, in Korea, came to their own conclusions about the benefits of vitamin C.

They said: “Topical use of silicone gel containing vitamin C has the effect of improving the appearance of fine surgical scars.”

Vitamin C is available to buy in serum form, which then can be applied to the scar.

Lavender oil

Lavender oil had antibiotic, antioxidant and antiseptic properties.

And it’s known to be best applied in the beginning of a scar formation.
