Zinc is a trace element in the human body which is essential for the biochemical processes.

Some of the essential processes dependent on zinc include cell reproduction, production and maintenance of hormone levels, protein synthesis and absorption of vitamins and other minerals.

When the body level of zinc is not enough to meet the body’s metabolic needs, a state of zinc deficiency occurs.

Zinc helps to keep hormone levels regulated which is one of the reasons why it is so effective in preventing and treating hair loss.

In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the role of vitamins and helping with hair loss was investigated.

The study noted: “In this review we summarize the role of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, B, C, D, E, iron, selenium and zinc in non-scarring alopecia.

“Micronutrients such as these vitamins play an important, but not entirely clear role in normal hair follicle development and immune cell function.”

The study concluded that vitamins such as zinc are important for normal cell growth and function and may contribute to hair loss when they are deficient.

Boston University School of Medicine found hair loss to be a common symptom of zinc deficiency.

Supporting this finding, a study by the Kurume University School of Medicine found participants deficient in zinc responded well to zinc supplements.

The researchers tested whether zinc deficiency-related alopecia improved with zinc supplements.

The researchers said: “In all patients, hair loss was cured or improved.

“The administration of zinc for zinc deficiency-related alopecia may recover appropriate activities of metalloenzymes, hedgehog signalling and immunomodulation, all of which are required for normal control of hair growth cycle.”

Dr Lucy Glancey said: “Zinc plays an important role in hair tissue growth and repair.

“It also helps keep the oil glands around the follicles working properly.

“Hair loss is a common symptom of zinc deficiency therefore zinc supplements can help with hair thinning and hair loss.”

Zinc plays a variety of roles in the body including growth and division of every cell, creating DNA, synthesis of protein as well as production of hormones, including thyroid hormone, a disruption in any of these important processes will result in hair loss.

Zinc is also a powerful antioxidant which is key in saving hair cells from the onslaught of free radicals.

Taking zinc supplements could help with hair loss due to its ability to protect against free radicals.

It’s important to speak with your GP before embarking on new supplements.
