Coronavirus symptoms: Corrie star confirms he has the virus with a unique set of symptoms

Coronavirus typically produces a new continuous cough, or a fever. But Corrie star Simon Gregson – who plays Steve McDonald – has got a unique set of symptoms. What are they?

Walking on the cobbles since 1989, Simon has had to accept that filming – for now – has ceased.

Following the coronavirus outbreak, ITV suspended the production of Corrie.

A statement from the broadcaster said: “ITV has sadly taken the decision to suspend production of the soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale with effect from Monday 23 March.”

Previous filming means Corrie episodes can continue to air till the early summer.

While on a hiatus, Simon has experienced first-hand what it’s like to have coronavirus.

Sharing his ordeal with fans over Twitter, he wrote: “[first] day out of bed today.

“Starting to feel a little better after contracting the virus.

“My main symptom was gastric and still is bloody awful, but lucky to not have respiratory. Stay safe everyone.”

Gastric can range from feeling nauseous, an upset stomach to loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

Keeping his cards close to his chest, Simon doesn’t disclose the exact gastric symptoms he experienced.

But the World Health Organisation (WHO) confirm that gastric symptoms can be a symptom of coronavirus.

The WHO adds that a runny nose and tiredness are also symptoms of the virus.

Respiratory symptoms include shortness of breath and a new, dry cough.

There has been growing evidence that some people may experience loss of smell and loss of taste during infection.

Responding to Simon’s tweet, co-stars were quick to comment. His on-screen daughter, Amy Barlow, said: “Get well soon.”

Connor McIntyre, who plays Pat Phelan, replied: “Glad to hear you’re on the other side of this my friend… nice ‘n’ easy does it.”

Although the cast is currently not working, Corrie bosses confirmed they would be paid for three months.

This follows an agreement with the trade union Equity – who advocates on behalf of creative practitioners.

A Corrie spokesperson told The Sun: “Coronation Street and Emmerdale have reached an agreement with Equity to provide financial security for regular cast members for the next three months.”

Like most people who will catch coronavirus, Simon is recovering at home.

Those displaying any symptoms of coronavirus are urged to self-isolate at home for seven days.

This means not leaving your home for any reason – including shopping for basic necessities.

After seven days, if a fever isn’t there, it’ll be OK to leave the house again for permitted reasons.
