A Clarence House spokesman said in a statement: “The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus.

He has been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in good health and has been working from home throughout the last few days as usual.

The Duchess of Cornwall has also been tested but does not have the virus. In accordance with Government and medical advice, the Prince and the Duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland.”

The spokesman added that it was impossible to say for certain where Prince Charles caught the deadly virus because of the large number of public engagements he has carried out in recent weeks.

Prince Charles has ensured not to shake hands with anyone as to further stop the spread of the virus. On Monday the Prince attended a church service and offered greetings and farewells using namaste rather than physical contact.

The coronavirus appears to be spreading more efficiently than its cousins Sars or Mers, which is most likely due to the fact it has broken out in an area of the world which is densely populated and where hospitals are severely undersupplied and understaffed.

The 2019-nCoV has a higher case-fatality ratio and a higher reproduction number than influenza, meaning it could spread more widely.

The Director-General of the WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “Our greatest concern is the potential of the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems, and which are ill-prepared to deal with it.”

The NHS advised: “Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus. You should only leave the house for one of four reasons:

“Shopping for basic necessities for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible

“One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household

“Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person

“Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home

The statement continued: “The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire where they met the criteria required for testing.

“It is not possible to ascertain from who the Prince caught the virus owing to the high number of engagements he carried out in his public role during recent weeks.”
