The check can detect retinoblastoma in babies and could lead to 50 cases a year in England being identified. The cancer can lead to the loss of both eyes and even death if undetected.
The new test – involving analysis of blood from the mother – was developed at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said: “It has the potential to save hundreds of lives over the coming years.”
