Liza Koshy knows what you're going to think when she announces her new beauty collection: "Liza Koshy thinks she's a beauty guru." The comedian and YouTube and TikTok star has spent enough time online to know exactly how to preempt any sarcasm or criticism — and how to poke fun at herself — and so she compiled her previous attempts at makeup into a YouTube supercut with exactly that title.
In her makeup videos, Koshy makes jokes like "If you look at my shadow, I look fantastic" and "The sun is going down, and so is my makeup career." The audience laughs because it's clear that Koshy, with her penchant for abstract, colorful makeup, and 18 million Instagram followers, does indeed have quite a career on her hands.
On October 19, Koshy becomes a bonafide beauty businesswoman with the launch of One of One, a range of skin-care and makeup products created in partnership with clean beauty brand C'est Moi. She's been an ambassador for the brand ever since a PR package (one of the perks of a massive follower count) landed on her doorstep, and she fell in love with their simple skin-care formulas. "I could pronounce everything on the back of the label, and I realized I wasn't able to do that with most of the other products in my bathroom," she tells Allure.
Koshy started speaking up about her love for the line, and the brand tapped her to become an official ambassador in August 2019. It's taken since then for her to create One of One, her own range housed within the brand. Fans of Koshy's will recognize her signature bright colors and sunshine vibes in the products' pigment and packaging, which is no coincidence.
"I think anybody who starts off as a creator online is kind of a control freak, and I'm so thankful to C'est Moi for allowing me to be hands-on, hands in, and hands rubbing every product," she says. "The feel is 'party of one.'"
The line's energy is light and fun, but the formula development process was anything but breezy. "All of our items are Environmental Working Group verified," she says. "I sat at their conference table and they take themselves so seriously, and I'm so glad they do because I need someone to be serious about what's going on my skin and in my body."
Koshy's favorite item — and the most difficult to formulate within EWG's rigorous standards — is the Give Em Face Mask Artist Kit ($42), a brightly colored multi-masking kit that comes with four different paint-on masks. "I was always running around, using one exfoliant on my forehead, and a moisturizer under my eyes, and a brightener on my cheeks; different parts of my face have different needs, so I created the kit to address it all," she says.
Koshy fans who want to recreate her love of non-traditional eyeliner may want to reach for the double-ended Think Twice Eyeliner Pencil ($12), each of which combines shades you might not necessarily think to put together. As of now, the three shades available are metallic auburn and matte taupe, matte brown and metallic rose gold, and my personal favorite, matte black and metallic teal. (Koshy also likes to use these to pencil in metallic freckles, she adds.)
She's also got shimmery liquid highlighter ($12) that comes with package instructions that say simply, "Dude, just rub it anywhere." That's not to be confused with the Shimmer Hydrafluid ($20), a skin-care product with a more metaphorical shimmer, thanks to moisturizing agents like jojoba oil and hyaluronic acid.
If you can't tell, Koshy's a fan of multi-purpose products. "One of my goals was to lighten the makeup bag," she says. "I wanted each product to have a versatility to it, maybe a two-for-one, but maybe also a four-for-one." She highlights the Face Balm Cleansing Duo ($16), which doubles as a physical exfoliant, thanks to the silicone brush head on one side. The Give Em Lip & Cheek Tinted Balm ($14) is another double, with berry, pink, and coral designed to moisturize lips or work as blush.
Since this is Koshy, the range also comes with an unconventional endorsement. "My best friend just had a baby, and I sent her the line, and she said, 'I could dunk my baby in this if I wanted to because I know it's so safe.'" Allure does not endorse dunking your baby no matter what the formula, but you get it.
One of One is available for presale on cestmoi.com, and will officially launch on November 16.
