Sometimes — maybe most of the time — the process of getting ready for a night out is more enjoyable than the outing itself. There's something wholly therapeutic about deciding on a beauty look, gathering up all the products needed to pull it off, and feeling that sense of pride when all the details come together just right. At least that's how actor and singer Zoë Kravitz feels. "Getting ready is fun," she tells Allure. "Getting ready feels good — paying attention to yourself like that."
Sadly, with a lack of big gatherings (or in Kravitz's case, high-profile red carpet appearances) due to the coronavirus pandemic, people have far fewer reasons to spend hours primping and priming — and that's one of the things Kravitz has missed most since March. "I think [self-isolating] made me realize how much I miss and love the ritual of the whole thing," she says. "And the transition from your 'home self' to 'out self,' you know? I think it's mentally very important."
That's why Kravitz has taken to putting on makeup consistently — even on the days when she's only going to the grocery store or on a walk in the park. Her go-to routine is pretty low-key, which shouldn't surprise anyone, considering her personal beauty mantra: "I really think [makeup] is a tool to highlight the qualities of yourself that you love," she says. "You want it to feel subtle, you want to feel special, and you want it to feel like you."
Her absolute favorite product for creating her signature, natural-looking complexion is YSL Beauté's Thouché Éclat All-Over Brightening Concealer Pen [she is a spokesperson for the brand]. "You don't have to cover your whole face in foundation if you don't feel like it," Kravitz raves. "You can just find the spots that you need to clear up."
She usually follows that up with blush and highlighter — for a no-makeup makeup look like Kravtiz's, we'd recommend subtle formulas like Best of Beauty winners Maybelline New York Cheek Heat Gel-Cream Blush and Becca Cosmetics Ignite Liquified Light Highlighter. Once her base is ready, she only needs one last product: a tinted eyebrow gel. If you ask Allure editors, Wander Beauty Frame Your Face Precise Brow Gel is the best of the best.
Even though her eyes are the most visible part of her consistently-masked face, Kravitz says she hasn't been giving much thought to playing up her eye makeup lately. "I love a liquid liner, but I just haven't been doing it," she says. "I think for me, it's about knowing that my skin looks nice and that I have a little blush on my face — I'm not really thinking about what's showing and what's not showing."

When she wants that extra bit of definition, though, she breaks out a classic cat-eye, which she's learned to execute flawlessly, thanks to a major makeup artist tip. "I've been paying a lot of attention to understanding your eye shape and understanding what kind of a line works for you," she explains. Her eyes, as she describes them, are rounded but small, so applying a thick line all the way across her lash line can make them look even smaller.
Instead, Kravitz draws on just the wing and doesn't connect it to the inner corners of the lids. "When I do a liquid liner of some kind, I start more on the end and go out, which makes my eyes look bigger," she explains. "If you want your eyes to lift, you don't want [the eyeliner] to be too heavy or it's going to have the opposite effect — it's all about where the line starts, where it stops, and the angle."
Makeup on or off, there's one beauty product that Kravitz refuses to put down, no matter where she is or what she's doing on any given day. "The one thing that I have been able to do consistently is wear YSL's Black Opium," she says. "I think scent is so important and… it can give me a sense of home and a sense of, 'this is what I smell like and what I feel like.'"
So even when you're not in the mood to swipe on some mascara or blend on concealer, Kravtiz hopes you don't hesitate to reach for a scent that you love — if anything, just to "put a little pep in your step."
